Family History Assignment

Topic 
I don’t have much family history, or a lot of family. No one ever talked about the past or things they encountered.
Direction:
Choose a family history from collection. Use our course materials to put this source into context. Connect past events and trends, described in our course materials, to details in the family history. What historical transformations led to the situation that the story describes? What does this family history tell us about one lived experience of these changes? How did these changes shape the everyday lives of people who experienced them?
Connect the family history to one or more of the themes we cover in our class modules: remembering and forgetting; empire; eugenics and scientific racism; mass production and sweatshops; crises of capitalist democracy; mass death and genocide; decolonization; postcolonial violence; the Great Acceleration. Please engage meaningfully with at least three sources from our course readings.

Present a thesis statement about how historical transformations shaped the lives of the people in your family history. 
Refer to one or more family histories and to three or more sources from the course readings and films
Cite every source (including quotations, paraphrases and historical details that are included but not quoted or paraphrased). You may choose the citation style you prefer, but please be consistent.
Contextualize the sources. Connect past events and trends, described in our course materials, to details in the family history/ histories.
Explain how your evidence (quotations, paraphrases and historical details) supports your main argument/ thesis statement.

You do not have to refer to your own family history; you can work with any material in the Family History document. You may also use your own family history and add details that family members might supply to you. An interview with a family member which is a specific kind of source (you should provide a citation if you include details that you learned when interviewing your family member).
